School is out! Now is the time to plan some fun, summer family trips. Prince George’s County dentist Dr. Tricia Boyce is always on the lookout for ways to educate her patients about dentistry. Fortunately, a quick trip to Baltimore is all you need! The National Museum of Dentistry is a great way to combine fun with education. Over 40,000 items in the museum’s collection help teach the history of dentistry and show kids (and adults!) how important it is to take care of their oral health.

Check Out George Washington’s Teeth

George Washington’s teeth are just one of many fun items on display (no they aren’t really made of wood). After viewing the first US president’s choppers, take a minute to look at different types of animal teeth and learn how each animal has teeth suited to its diet. Next, wander into the “Teeth in Popular Culture” exhibit to learn how teeth have played a role in popular culture. It’s taken centuries for people to realize the power of a healthy smile, and now it is more valuable than ever.

Learn Good Oral Health Habits

Now that you know the importance of a nice smile, head into “The Prevention Gallery” to learn how to keep your teeth white and shiny. The gallery takes a look at dentistry through the years and displays how dental sciences have progressed from simple extraction to prevention. Plus, you can even learn the history of the toothbrush and listen to old toothbrush ads on the Tooth Jukebox.

Kids of all ages will get a kick out the “Mouthpower” exhibit that allows them to put on a lab coat and brush larger-than-life teeth. There is even giant floss that helps kids practice fine motor skills and good oral health habits. Everyone will love the dental theatre. There you will learn about the role of teeth in forensic science and advancements in bio-engineering to grow new teeth. These are just a few of the many exhibits to explore at the museum. You are sure to have a wonderful time.
