Everyone’s daily routine is different, but one daily habit should be on everyone’s to-do list – flossing. Riverdale Park Dental knows the importance of flossing in addition to brushing your teeth twice daily. Flossing your teeth can be difficult to remember and feel like a chore but the health of your mouth depends on it! Below is a list of dental flossing techniques and benefits.
Flossing Your Teeth: How Do I Do It?
Flossing is another way to remove food or plaque from your teeth. This is an important step in keeping great oral health care. You may be wondering if you are using the right technique. Well we have your answer.
How To Floss
- Winding your floss
Pull out a piece of floss that is approximately 18 inches. Wind it around your middle finger on one hand then do the same thing on your other hand. Pinch the floss between your thumb and your index fingers, leaving at least 1 inch in length in-between.
Tip: use your thumb to direct floss between the upper teeth.
- Direct your floss
Make sure you have one to two inches of floss in-between your fingers. Use your index finger to direct the floss.
Glide the floss in a zigzag motion. Try to make a C-shape with the floss as you wrap it around your teeth.
At this stage, the floss should be on your teeth’s surface, under the gum line. Don’t forget the back side of each tooth.
There are many types and even flavors of floss including: dental tape floss, waxed, unwaxed and spongy floss. Ask Riverdale Park Dental’s doctor Tricia Boyce for suggestions on the best types of dental floss.
Why Flossing Your Teeth Is Important
There are a lot of benefits that come with flossing your teeth. Here are a few of the top reasons to floss your teeth:
- Prevents plaque
When you floss frequently you are removing the daily plaque that builds up in-between and on your teeth. By flossing you are getting rid of or lessening the chances of tartar build up. An added plus to daily flossing is brighter teeth.
- Prevents diseases
Some dentists have proven that flossing reduces chances of getting heart diseases. This is because it prevents against periodontal disease, tooth decay and gum diseases.
