You might be surprised at how long the toothbrush has been around. We wanted to share some of the main events in toothbrush history over the years. Read on to learn more about the history of the toothbrush.
Toothbrush History Over the Years
The first known device used for cleaning teeth dates back to 3500-3000 BC when the Egyptians and Babylonians made a brush by fraying one end of a twig. Additionally, in some Ancient Chinese writings from approximately 1600 BC they describe the use of chewed twigs obtained from aromatic trees. They chewed these twigs because it was believed to help freshen the mouth not so different than our modern day mouthwash or gum.
Over the years, versions of toothbrushes with bristles were made from various animal hairs. Some of the animals the bristles came from included horses, boars and even swine. However, the modern toothbrush history began in the year 1938 when Dupont introduced a toothbrush with nylon bristles. The invention of the first electric toothbrush followed the following year.
Today both electric and manual toothbrushes come in many shapes and sizes and are all typically made with nylon bristles and plastic molded handles. An interesting thing to note is that the basic fundamentals that make up a toothbrush have remained the same. Since the times of the Babylonians and Egyptians, a bristle like feature and a grip to handle were a part of the “toothbrush.”
